Brushed and vacuumed the pool and backwashed the filter. Brought the FC up to SLAM level of 16 ppm. Ran pump for 6 hours and lowered the water level and installed the pillow and cover. Unhooked the pump and let it dry out, then put in the basement for the winter. Did the same with the MPV. Drained the filter and put the drain cap and the pump drain plug in the pump basket.
Added a total amount of 70oz. of bleach to get back u up to 12 ppm FC., Anticipate closing either tomorrow or Thursday. Water looking real good; water temp is right where it needs to be. Filter pressure is at 10 psi. One last vacuum and brushing will be completed. Just need to get the air pillow half full, remove the ladder, and get the water lowered to a level below the return fitting. Once the cover is on, I can winterize the skimmer and put the Gizmo and the return plug in. Then just disconnect the pump and bring it and the gray hoses inside for winter storage. The last thing will be removing the MPV and bringing it inside for the winter as well.

Adding 35 oz. of bleach to get up to 12.5 ppm. Anticipating closing early next week, and I don't want any surprises. Have some new leaves to vacuum out, and just a tiny bit of dirt. Should be a quick cleanup and then get everything shut down. Water pressure remains at 10.5 today. Temp is holding it's sub-60 degree reading as well.

When I pulled the solar cover late on Oct. 4th, there was a lot of debris on the bottom. Upon brushing, the water became green-tinged. It soon became apparent I was in a full-on algae bloom within minutes. I added chlorine to get up to SLAM level of 16. I re-brushed and made a trip for more chlorine. I brought my chlorine level back up to 20 ppm around 10 pm and did so every 4 hours all night. I continued all day Saturday with the 4-hour regimen. I could begin to make out some of the pattern in the liner by nightfall on Saturday. I brought the chlorine up to 20 ppm, backwashed, and left the filter to do its job overnight. By Sunday morning, it was obvious that we had made a lot of progress. I again brushed and vacuumed and brought the chlorine back up to 20 ppm and maintained my 4-hour regimen until 11 pm Sunday night. I did my 1st OCLT Monday morning and passed. I dropped my FC to SLAM level 16 ppm as a result and maintained it at 6-hour intervals on Monday. My OCLT on Tuesday morning was a pass as well. I again brushed, vacuumed, and backwashed on Tuesday pm. The water looked perfect. One final OCLT was passed on Wed. am. I have maintained FC at 11 ppm up until I can get some help from my grandson this weekend to close the pool. Water temp this morning is 53 degrees, and filter pressure is at 10.5 psi. Today's test this morning still in great shape. Lots of leaves are falling, but we'll get those all vacuumed up and the pool closed on Saturday, Lord willing. Water temp this morning is 53 degrees, and filter pressure is 10.5 psi.

Would like to get a closing ASAP. Average date of October 10th for our first hard freeze. Don't want to wait much longer. Considering putting the winter cover on to keep from gaining any temp. on these cold nights and very warm days (38 degrees overnight, and daytime highs of 80 degrees.)

Adding 35 oz. of bleach to get FC back up to 9.0 in preparation for possibly closing by the weekend. Pump psi remains at 10.5. The rain that arrived late last week wetted & emptied a lot of the accumulated dust from the top of the solar cover. I need a good vacuuming now, but I have work this week prior to Friday. That's why I'm going to elevate my FC up to 9.0 for a few days, to prevent any problems before the weekend. Looking at the forecast, I should be able to get the closing done over the weekend, beginning with a good double vac and brush on Friday. Overnight temps are projected to be near 40 degrees beginning tomorrow night. Daytime highs should be in the high 50's to low 60's, which should get me over the hump on water temp. Just need to get down to 60 degrees.

Water temp has finally begun to drop. This morning it is at 66 degrees, due to the rain we have received over the past couple days. More rain is expected throughout the day today, with nights over the weekend coming in at 40degrees or so. We may be closing early next week, hopefully. Chlorine is holding remarkably well at 8.0 FC this morning. I'm going to bump it up to 9.0 today, in preparing to close at SLAM level. Everything else is looking good. Water p.s.i. remains at 10.5.

Adding 43 oz. of bleach to get back up to 8.0 ppm FC. Also tested ph and CYA. Both were in great shape. We had been heading downward on temperatures, but this weekend has brought a return to low to mid 80's, and we have also gained about 3-4 degrees of pool temp as a result. Everything else still looking good. Pressure is holding steady at 10.5 p.s.i.

Today we had to euthanize Rider. It has been just a horrible day for everyone, especially Jason, Sonja, and Aaron. Yesterday, I got a quick brush and vacuum, not perfect, but ok for now. Adding 35 oz. of bleach tonight to get us back up to 9.0, as I continue to run a little "hot" on purpose-to make sure we don't get any algae started before we close at 60 degrees. Tonight, the water temp is 67 degrees, so we're slowly getting there. Pressure is holding well at 10.5. all other chemical levels are holding quite steady.

Had some decent rain yesterday, and more is expected tomorrow. With the rain came the brisk winds, beginning the annual dumping of leaves into the pool. I have to remember to be more vigilant of the skimmer basket, as a leaf mess in there can starve the pump for water. The pool water temp remains at 69 degrees, too warm to cover and close. I can't let the pump run when no one is home for at least until the leaves are down or the air temp plummets, cooling the water sufficiently to cool the water to below 60 degrees. Adding 17 oz. of bleach to keep FC well above normal (9.0 ppm) until we close. All other chems remain in good shape for now. Filter pressure is 10.5 psi on Hi, and 3.5 psi on Lo.

Filter pressure was at 10.5 psi tonight on high, and 3.5 on low. This is right on spec for those readings. It appears that the pump is ok. It has now run for four days without incident. Adding 35 oz. of bleach to get my FC back up to 9ppm. All other chemical levels are very good this evening. Some very cold nights in store for us for the remainder of the week. Time to begin to formulate a plan for closing. I'm giving serious thought to going with a mesh cover and adding a couple more pillows under it, in addition to the one I have. If I buy one that's overly long, say 30' to fit a 27' pool, it should be able to fasten on the pool lower than the 24-footer solid cover that I have. Once you lower the water below the inlet and put a pillow in the middle, it puts a lot of strain on the top plate when the wind blows and the "parachute" deploys, as the cover is secured just a few inches below the top plate, even though it actually measures 27', it's barely 24' once installed. I'll probably scour the TFP forums for some help in making my decision.

Changed out the pressure gauge on the filter this morning. Had a bit of a scare when I turned the pump back on and it just buzzed; it would not start. I tried several times throughout the day, to no avail. This evening, when I went out to test the water, I tried one last time to start the pump before I had to think about dropping a utility pump in there overnight, just for circulation. I'm not sure if somehow the thermal overload function of the pump had been tripped earlier, or whether starting it on low speed was easier on the equipment, but it fired right up. WHEW! Even though we missed a couple days' testing, the extra "warm" chlorine level from last weekend carried us through. I'm adding only 17 oz. of bleach to get back up to 9.0 FC. All else remains in great shape. Water temp has been dropping steadily since around the 22nd. Filter pressure today was 11.0

Got a good amount of work done today. I was behind on both brushing and vacuuming, so I did both today...TWICE. Also, injected the ladder with bleach and changed the skimmer hairnet out. I had planned to do the pump basket as well, but it was quite clean. I had just done it last wek, though. Water picked up several degrees since last night, even though the overnight temp was 53 degrees. Added 17 oz. of chlorine to bring the level back up to a "warm" 9.0 FC. All other chems were in good shape.

Still maintaining elevated FC until I'm sure we are in good shape on the FC. Last night was the 3rd consecutive night with overnight lows in the mid-50's. The temp has gone from 85-86 over the weekend to just 71 this evening. I'm thinking about getting a leaf net to keep the leaves out of the pool until the leaves are all done falling. Then I can remove it for winter at closing. We would just keep using our pillow/winter cover as usual for the winter months.

Last night's hefty addition of bleach helped. This morning, FC is 8.5ppm and CC is 0.5 ppm. I am going to maintain my 8.5 level for a couple days to make sure nothing is going on. My plan to brush and vacuum the entire pool today is currently on hold, as we have received approx. 1/2 inch of rain this morning with more in the forecast for this afternoon and evening. This is the first significant rain in almost 3 weeks, and badly needed.

Got about a 1/4 inch of rain late last night. Washed some of the dust/Canadian forest fire smoke from the cover into the pool. This raised the CC's to 0.5 ppm. I'll attempt to get a good cleaning done this weekend. The grandkids will be back in school next week, which will definitely signal that the end is near for this swimming season. Adding 26 oz. of bleach to get the FC back up to target level of 7.5 ppm FC. All other tests look good tonight.
